Background of the Study
Algorithmic translation systems, powered by advanced NLP models, have transformed cross-linguistic communication by automating the translation process. In Nigeria, where Nigerian English has developed distinct characteristics influenced by indigenous languages, algorithmic translation plays a dual role: facilitating communication and influencing language standardization (Adejumo, 2023). These systems convert texts between Nigerian English and other languages, often reinforcing standard linguistic norms. However, the algorithmic processes sometimes oversimplify or misrepresent local idioms, cultural expressions, and non-standard forms (Okoro, 2024). Historical documents and contemporary digital texts reveal that Nigerian English continues to evolve through contact with indigenous languages and globalization. As algorithmic translation becomes more prevalent, it can affect language standardization by promoting certain linguistic forms over others (Chinwe, 2025). This study investigates how algorithmic translation influences the standardization of Nigerian English, evaluating its accuracy and the potential biases introduced by automated systems.

Statement of the Problem
Although algorithmic translation systems are widely used in Nigeria, their effect on language standardization in Nigerian English remains underexplored. Existing models may favor standardized forms, potentially marginalizing local variations and non-standard expressions (Adejumo, 2023). This phenomenon raises concerns about cultural homogenization and the loss of linguistic diversity (Okoro, 2024). The lack of systematic evaluation of these effects hinders the development of balanced language policies and educational materials that respect linguistic innovation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the accuracy of algorithmic translation systems for Nigerian English.
  2. To identify potential biases in promoting standardized forms.
  3. To recommend measures for balancing standardization with linguistic diversity.

Research Questions

  1. How do algorithmic translation systems influence Nigerian English standardization?
  2. What biases exist in current translation models?
  3. How can these systems be improved to accommodate non-standard forms?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the role of algorithmic translation in shaping Nigerian English, providing insights into the balance between standardization and linguistic diversity. Its findings will inform developers, educators, and policymakers, ensuring that translation tools respect local language variations while promoting effective communication.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on algorithmic translation’s impact on Nigerian English standardization and does not extend to other language pairs or non-automated translation methods.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Algorithmic Translation: The use of computer algorithms to automatically translate text.
  2. Language Standardization: The process of developing consistent language norms.
  3. Nigerian English: A variety of English influenced by local Nigerian languages and cultural practices.
